Acadiana/Region 4 Focusing on Louisiana’s Biggest Killers

The Acadiana LHCC is taking a dead aim at tobacco and obesity through long-term efforts, such as creating smoke free communities. We are also addressing ways to reduce cancer rates in the area in order to help foster more immediate improvements in health and save lives.

Regional Priorities/Goals:

  1. Reduce Acadiana obesity rates.
  2. Decrease the public’s exposure to secondhand smoke and increase regional cessation services.
  3. Reduce regional cancer rates.

Congregational Health dinner presentation to gain support for the Lafayette Smoke-Free ordinance, which later passed.

Coalition Activities:

  • Assist and support youth obesity prevention programs.
  • Increase physical fitness activities for adults.
  • Support comprehensive smoke-free ordinances in the region.
  • Promote and enroll eligible community and workplace members in Smoking Cessation Trust (i) services.
  • Promote health services as part of regular cultural celebrations and events.
  • This program provides reimbursement of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), telephone Quit Line services, office visits and counseling for Louisiana residents who began smoking before Sept. 1, 1988. See www.smokingcessationtrust.org.

  • Supported Lafayette Smoke-Free ordinance passage.
  • Worked to establish smoke-free bingo games.
  • Planned regional workshop with Office of Public Health.
  • Participated in Free to Breathe Lung Cancer 5K.
  • Hosted successful smoke-free ping pong tournament.
  • Held a community baby shower.
  • Hosted a Congregational Health dinner presentation to gain support for a Lafayette Smoke-Free ordinance.
