Lake Charles Tuten Park Gets A Healthy Upgrade

Tuten Park in Lake Charles, LA has been on a long journey to become the city’s premier nature park. LHCC helped the Southwest Louisiana Master Naturalist and community volunteers continue the trend to build safe green spaces for physical activity by upgrading walking trails to create a nature scavenger hunt –complete with educational signage and refurbished raised garden beds so people can spot & learn about the benefits of native plants while they exercise.

CAGNO Feeds Cancer Survivors During Pandemic

The Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans BOOSTED the nutrition of cancer survivors –seriously! By expanding partnership with Top Box foods and shifting nutrition distribution to home delivery, 200low-income cancer survivors accessed fresh produce and Boost, nutritional meal replacement, delivered straight to their door.

Active Transportation in Lake Charles, LA

Southwest Louisiana Center for Health Services and the Greater Lake Charles Rotary Club added benches to the First Avenue Walking Trail in Lake Charles, LA Avenue. With help from LHCC, the First Avenue Walking Trail has been transformed from an old abandoned railroad track to a community resource fostering safe environments for walking, biking, and transportation connecting residents to key destinations like schools, churches, daycare centers, and more.

Bike Friendly Downtown Hammond

Downtown Hammond just got more bike friendly! The Hammond Downtown Development District worked with community members and Boy Scouts Troop 170 to install 18 bike racks at key destinations in Downtown Hammond –Urban Plaza & location of farmers market, Cate Square Park, city hall, police station, and Hanson Crossing located near local restaurants. The group plans to add local art decals to the racks in early 2021.

Local Produce Curbside Pick Ups at the Hammond Farmers Market

The Hammond Farmers Market whipped into action and developed an online market platform, enabling digital payments, pre-orders, and safer customer food curbside pick-ups during nationwide farmers market closures at the start of the pandemic. Their efforts ensured local, fresh produce didn’t rot in our farmers’ fields and over 100 community members got the healthy food they needed during times of uncertainty.

Market Umbrella Makes Healthy, Local Produce Accessible During Pandemic

Connecting the local community with local food! Market Umbrella / Crescent City Farmers Market, in partnership with Top Box Foods, stepped up to the challenge to keep healthy food in reach with local produce home-delivery during in-person shopping market closures at the start of the pandemic. They expanded marketing efforts of their SNAP/ food stamp dollar match program, ensuring healthy food reached low-income households, and supported local farmers with stipends to grow even more fruits & vegetables.

Healthy food and plants with SPROUT NOLA

While grocery shelves were empty at the start of the pandemic in March 2020, Sprout NOLA pivoted their operations to ensure people could access fresh produce in uncertain times. From growing seeds to offering pick-up at Press Street Gardens & home delivery to elderly residents in Treme-Lafitte neighborhood of New Orleans, Sprout’s efforts got 600 vegetable plants to people experiencing food insecurity to boost home-based gardens.

Growing Healthy Schools in Monroe, LA

In Monroe, the Ouachita Healthy Communities Coalition worked with Shady Grove Elementary to build an inviting outdoor classroom space, complete with a herb & vegetable garden and durable outdoor flooring for on-going use. Teachers and students will use the space to learn about science, nutrition, and gardening through tastings, experiments, and classwork all in the garden setting!
