Putting Stats and Facts to Work in Northeast Louisiana/Region 8

Thomas Jefferson said, “Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government.” The Northeast LHCC is doing its best to improve health by making sure area leaders are aware of the health issues adolescents face, the benefits of going smoke-free, as well as the tactics used by the tobacco industry to undermine such efforts.

Regional Priorities/Goals:

  1. Reduce second-hand smoke exposure.
  2. Promote tobacco cessation.
  3. Improve adolescent health; raise awareness of tobacco marketing techniques targeting youth.
Northeast Louisiana
On National Kick Butts Day, Farmerville high schoolers pledged to be tobacco-free.

Coalition Activities:

  • Work with the mayors of Richmond and Ruston to provide information on the impact of smoke-free laws.
  • Partner with community members to promote awareness of tobacco marketing tactics.
  • Partner with community members to promote cessation.
  • Work with the town of Sterlington to make all parks smoke-free.
  • Educate legislators and providers about the current adolescent health crisis.
  • Participate in collaborative activities to improve of current adolescent health statistics.
Northeast Louisiana
LHCC and the Northeast Children’s Museum partnered to create a tobacco-free Mardi Gras zone during the Krewe of Janus parade.

Past Work/Successes:

  • Led initiative to make workplaces in Monroe, West Monroe and Ouachita Parish 100% smoke-free.
  • Worked on smoke-free parks in West Monroe and Bastrop.
  • Worked with Lake Providence to see a point-of-sale tobacco policy passed, limiting tobacco product advertising within three (3) feet of candy or toys.
  • Worked with Monroe City School to promote school health councils and comprehensive wellness policies.
  • Built a community garden in Monroe at S. 8th and Orange Streets to advance healthy eating.
