Regional Priorities/Goals:

  1. Decrease smoking prevalence.
  2. Decrease youth obesity prevalence.
  3. Increase the community’s awareness and knowledge on ways to improve health.
Northwest Louisiana
Providing resources to City of Shreveport Employees at Wellness Event.

Coalition Activities:

  • Promote comprehensive smoke-free workplace policies; support municipalities and businesses in the enactment of those policies; provide pre- and post- policy technical assistance.
  • Offer cessation resources at all member events.
  • Increase awareness and access to healthy snack choices; discourage sugar-sweetened, high-calorie beverage consumption.
  • Assist and support staff, youth and parents though awareness building, educational programming and technical assistance on childhood obesity, nutrition, healthy food choices and shopping on a budget.
  • Increase physical activity / play time; encourage the use of donated play equipment.
  • Encourage partner agencies to implement a healthy food policy.

Past Work/Successes:

  • Collaborated with Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation (SPAR), City of Shreveport and Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in health initiatives.
  • Educated HUDREI residents on smoke-free housing rule; provided cessation resources.
  • Partnered with Feist-Weiller Cancer Center for head and neck cancer screening
  • Hosted African American Male Cessation Initiative (AAMCI) (Shreveport) Community Conversations with area stakeholders; assisted with AAMCI Survey, visiting area businesses, churches, barbershops, malls and more, obtaining 836 surveys in 1½ weeks.
  • Distributed over 300 Krewe de Quit cessation kits at community events and area healthcare facilities.
  • Hosted 7th Annual "Kick Butts" Block Party in SUSLA’s ??? parking lot with over 200 participants, including elementary/college students, faculty and staff members.
  • Hosted an additional Kick Butts Day event at Keithville Middle School; Defy team members addressed the audience of over 300 youth/adults; attendees signed a pledge banner and participated in balloon launch.
